Sony Announces Waterproof Xperia Z1 Smartphone

While it was far from a surprise, Sony announced its newest flagship smartphone during its IFA press conference in Berlin on Wednesday morning. As expected, the device features a 5-inch Triluminous display running on the company's X-Reality for mobile engine. But the most unique feature of the Xperia Z1 is arguably its ability to block out errant drops in the swimming pool. Sony president and CEO Kaz Hirai reiterated the smartphone is "fully waterproof," while touting a host of new social camera features.


When the Xperia Z1 launches globally later this month, you can expect a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.2GHz processor, a 3000 mAh battery, with 2GB of RAM. Flash memory is available up to 16GB, with expansion up to 64GB via microSD slot. The Xperia Z1's one-piece aluminum frame will be available in either black, white, or purple finishes, but Sony made no mention of mobile carrier arrangements or price.
