The Knick: "Mr. Paris Shoes" Review

The Knick side-stepped some of the surgical shock and awe from its pilot in "Mr. Paris Shoes" - a short installment (by what we've grown used to from premium cable run times) that was still able to, despite it feeling like it was missing an "ending," expand upon the characters and build up the world of the series. As Thackery himself explained to Nurse Lucy, the personal lives of the Knick's staff should remain separate from the work. Fortunately for us however, those secret lives started to come to light a bit more here.


A big focus this week, despite being all but ignored by his co-workers, was Andre Holland's Dr. Edwards. Given the way the pilot episode ended with Dr. Edwards' enthusiasm regarding Thackery's risky, ingenue surgical practices, it was a bit of a disappointment to see the man relegated to the basement and indefinitely sidelined. Thackery didn't present himself as a racist in the first episode, only as a man who didn't have time for the problems that a black doctor would bring to the hospital. But the fact that Thackery, hands tied, is now more or less stuck with Edwards hasn't helped to break through the stubbornness. In fact, it's strengthened Thackery's single-mindedness. And only after a patient eventually dies from a failed aortic aneurysm procedure does Thackery begin to consider Edwards' acumen.
