Veil #2 Review

veil2 While Veil #2 lacks the effortless poetry of the first issue, the book still delivers on the promise of its potential as writer Greg Rucka and artist Tony Fejzula shine a little light on the series' greater mysteries. But because giving the audience a straight answer would be far simpler than a book like Veil deserves, we're led to even more questions. And we wouldn't have it any other way.


While the series' first installment focused almost entirely on its unusual and silent protagonist, issue #2 widens the story's scope. As besuited men with guns conduct an ill-fated meeting with a magician who deals in the dark arts with an unerring sense of confidence, we begin to see that Veil is at the center of something much larger than herself. While that nascent storyline hints at something unique and compelling, the issue is a bit bogged down in the same danger dealt with in Veil #1, namely the threat of sexual violence. Veil is as naive to the world's darkness as a newborn babe, and it feels a bit lazy to continually threaten her with the potential for rape. The point was driven home well enough in the first issue; here, it feels like rehashing.
