The Americans: "Behind the Red Door " Review

Elizabeth has been troubled all season and for someone who is a master at compartmentalizing, it’s notable to see her unraveling in this manner. She and Philip long ago accepted their lives as spies involve sleeping with other people, but it was fascinating and troubling seeing her unable to let go of what Martha told her last week. An incredibly telling line was when she said to Philip, "When Jennifer went to talk to your wife" - separating herself by saying it was Jennifer, yet unable to do the same for Philip, since it was “Your wife,” not “Clark’s wife.”


When she said, "I think I would like to try it with Clark”, you knew it was asking for trouble. And man, what an upsetting scene, as Philip/Clark tried to be the “animal” she wanted, only for her to break down crying. Mathew Rhys was excellent in the silent moment that followed, as Philip went into the mirror and looked at himself in disgust. Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s issues are so complicated - if Philip truly acts like a different person when he’s being intimate with Martha, why? Is there something about Martha that turns him on more than Elizabeth? But if he acts the same, it also means she might have to more openly accept that her husband is, well, having sex with other people, something she’d shut off for so long. No easy answers here, which is part of what makes this show so compelling.
