Aquaman and the Others #1 Review

We live in fortuitous times. Not only has DC managed to keep an Aquaman comic on the stands for the better part of three years. Not only is said Aquaman comic consistently among the most critically adored series every month. But now DC is publishing a second Aquaman series that spins out of the current book. With Aquman now a legitimate franchise, it's surely only a matter of time until we get Ultimate Aquaman, The Superior Aquaman, Aquaman Unchained, and Atlantean Babies.


Aquaman and the Others builds very directly on Geoff Johns' second story arc from 2012 and the two follow-up issues written by John Ostrander. Ostrander handled his Aquaman stories well and would have been a good fit for this series, but that's not what we have here. Instead, writer Dan Jurgens and artist Lan Medina are picking up where Johns, Ostrander, Ivan Reis, and the rest left off. The new creative team are able to deliver a competent first issue, if not the home run that a team book comprised of such obscure characters really needs to make a name for itself.
