Certain video game trends have persisted for so long that they've become part of an ingrained gamer logic. Red barrels will explode when shot, bosses will have weak points, and mages will dish out crazy damage... from a safe distance.
Michael McMain, founder of developer Xaviant, has a problem with that last bit.
"When I play RPGs, I'm always a mage," McMain said. "But I feel like the mage is always scaled down to be balanced with the other classes. If someone can demonstrate incredible power, to be fair, they can't use it all the time because of cooldowns and mana bars."
"I wanted to make a game where we unshackle the mage," he concluded.
You've probably heard the saying, "The best offense is a good defense." Well, in Lichdom: Battlemage, the two are often inseparable. Teleporting is quick and easy, and it can be used to escape, but that would be a waste of the powerful elemental blast that follows the movement. Likewise, timing a perfect block releases a wave of damaging energy. The better you are at staying alive, the better you are at killing everything.
