If you need proof that Superman IV: The Quest For Peace didn't need to be as depressingly lame as it was, look no further than Superman Unchained #6. On a basic level, this issue features a similar plot, as Superman struggles to use his might to rid the world of its nuclear arsenal. But as it turns out, between replacing the dorky villain with a somewhat better one, injecting the plot with a heavy dose of tension and a ticking clock, and exploiting Clark's relationship with his friends and allies to full effect, you really can arrive at an exciting Superman epic.
Wraith is certainly no Nuclear Man, but he hasn't been fleshed out to the degree I would have liked in this story. This issue doesn't do much to lend him any new depth, considering that his role is now largely a physical opponent to Superman. But if the role of a villain is to make the hero better, Wraith fulfills his function well. Scott Snyder allows Clark to make his case and justify the hero he is - one who can and must save everyone at all costs. Superman finally turns the tables on his supposedly superior foe, using brainpower as well as brute force and showing that he has a little Batman in him. Speaking of which, Batman plays a small but very memorable role in this issue as he provides some long-distance support to his super-best friend. Obviously Snyder knows his way around Gotham, but this allows him to explore a very different facet of the Caped Crusader, if only fleetingly.
