After beating around the bush in the previous two issues, "Killable" truly gets underway with Wolverine #9. Paul Cornell lays out the real stakes for Logan in this new conflict as he makes sense of Mystique's latest attack and the growing conspiracy to take advantage of his newly mortal state. The shadows are gathering, and that's great news for readers.
At this point Mystique has become the most overused villain in the X-Men franchise since Marvel NOW began. But Cornell merely uses her as a means to an end, positioning Mystique as just one of many forces marshaling against Wolverine. There's a terrific sense of foreboding in this issue as Logan deduces the message she left behind and the inevitable trials he'll face. The fight with Batroc, clearly framed as the first with many, only further enhances this dark tone.
