Note: Full spoilers for Sons of Anarchy follow.
According to various sources on the internet, “Poenitentia” refers to regret and repentance and is where we get the word penitence. The episode was a study in both repentance and regret, starting with Nero’s visit to confession, continuing with Clay’s remorse for his actions when he was leader of SAMCRO, and I can only assume concluding with Tig having at least a twinge of regret for his own past actions. As for Jax or Toric, they haven’t come around to regretting their activities yet, but the season is still young. “Poenitentia” is also a legal term referring to backing out of a contract or agreement, which could allude to Jax’s desire to get SAMCRO out of the gun business.
