Man of Tai Chi Review

Keanu Reeves loves martial arts. Sifting through his bio might unearth specific reasons why, but it's an easy judgment to make after two hours in the ring with his directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi. The film reteams Reeves with Yuen Woo-ping and Tiger Chen Hu, his Matrix action choreographer and kung fu trainer, respectively.


Together, they boil down the Chinese fight film into a spectacle of physicality, where swift punches and roundhouse kicks are delivered like the Swan Lake pirouettes. A loose plot acts as connective tissue between a series of vicious dances — and Reeves venerates every move.


Casting a leading man who can actually pull off the acrobatic stunt work instantly elevates Man of Tai Chi. Chen Hu plays Chen Lin-Hu, a directionless delivery boy who finds solace in the meditative fighting style of tai chi. Yes, that retirement home staple can actually be put to devastating use, though Chen's master urges to only use the form for personal exercise. When Chen realizes the power of tai chi, he can't help but indulge; he enters himself in a martial arts tournament, beating his aggressive opponents to the ground with a series of swift and graceful counters.
