After three tedious episodes that were more or less interchangeable, Low Winter Sun finally delivered “Catacombs,” a marked improvement over everything that’s come before. The primary thread of this episode is Agnew’s search for Katia, his missing-maybe-dead prostitute that has something to do with the dead cop McCann. Meanwhile, Geddes deals with his shoplifting daughter, Khalil follows her leads on the murdered boy, and Damon tries to keep things running smoothly at the Blind Pig.
Mark Strong shines this week with his performance as a cop just about to bubble over with rage, only to culminate in a surprising and endearing emotional collapse by episode’s end. Unfortunately, the show veers into overly bizarre territory for its titular Catacombs – a hooker den where anything goes – that leaves the realism that the show so desperately clamors for behind.
