Structurally, Infinity is very comparable to Secret Invasion in how the event combines a core mini-series with two companion Avengers books filling in the gaps. And if these past few weeks have proven anything, it's that Avengers and New Avengers are essential to receiving the full Infinity experience. As the event moves into its second month now, the real question is how much of a complete story the Infinity mini-series can offer.
The good news is that, while readers are definitely missing out on some great material if they skip Avengers and New Avengers, Infinity #2 works well enough on its own. Jonathan Hickman's dramatic narration provides a sweeping view of the conflicts on Earth and in space and reiterates the main beats of the previous tie-in issues. Seeing a single panel of Black Panther clashing with Black Maw in Wakanda doesn't hold the same appeal as watching the Wakanda invasion unfold in New Avengers #9, but these redux scenes accomplish what they need to as far as reiterating the core plot elements of Infinity.
