Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...
Boardwalk's back, and while "New York Sour" lacked the explosive presence of a Gyp Rosetti (RIP), it was a still a good establishing episode - picking up eight months after the violent chaos of Season 3 to show us where (most) everyone had landed. However, other than a few clues indicating that Nucky will eventually somehow get mixed up with gangster/entertainment world in Harlem (Owney Madden and The Cotton Club were mentioned several times) there wasn't much here to give us an overall idea as to the framework of this year's batch of episodes.
Not that we need that right off the bat, but that lack of a story compass, plus the fates of several characters left unaddressed, made the episode feel a touch bereft. To be fair, Boardwalk doesn't spill out its narrative like other TV shows do. It's become, over the the years, a much more meditative affair - spiked with shocking moments of explosive violence. Very true to, say, the Scorsese-model of gangster story-telling. So, despite the long-ish time-jump, "New York Sour" was still very much about picking up the pieces of Season 3; with our main players either laying low or having to deal with their new, lower position on the social ladder.
