Avengers Arena #15 Review

You have to tip your hat to Dennis Hopeless for using every aspect of Avengers Arena to its maximum potential. The isolation, the desperation, and the fact that anyone can die at any moment hangs heavy over each issue, and this time he uses it to create a moment that is as surprising and entertaining as it is depressing and heart-wrenching.

A big complaint about mainstream superhero comics is that death means nothing. I disagree. Yes, characters come back to life on a regular basis, but that doesn’t mean the emotions you felt when they died weren’t genuine. While the entire cast of Avengers Arena might be alive and happy one day in the future, this is not that day. Hopeless uses death as an effective storytelling device in order to show that actions have consequences, and, in a strange way, that love is worth dying for. Not the kind of sentiment you expected from this series, is it?
