Bypassing the pilot stage, CBS have given a straight-to-series order for Extant, a new drama debuting summer 2014. The immediate impact of the success of Under the Dome for CBS is obvious looking at Extant, which shares many traits – a 13-episode order, a summer run, a serialized nature (on a network that loves its standalone/procedural shows) and Steven Spielberg executive producing.
Like with the hit Under the Dome, Spielberg’s Amblin Television is producing Extant, alongside CBS Television Studios. Extant is described as “a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.”
