24: Live Another Day - "8:00 PM-9:00 PM" Review

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

24 traditionally will go through a few big bad guys in a given season, with the trade-in of one for another signaling the next story arc. So while Margot may have unceremoniously handed the Big Baddie baton on to Cross and Navarro during the last episode, this week was the real transition. With the abbreviated structure this time around they're able to zip through those two in an hour before landing squarely on Cheng, aka The Man Who Tortured the Crap out of Both Jack and Audrey. His entrance at the end of the hour significantly raises the stakes in every way.

But that’s not to say this episode was twiddling its thumbs while it waited for the big reveal. Picking up with Jack’s pursuit of a desperate Navarro, this was yet another strong, fast-paced hour. I particularly enjoyed Cross and Navarro's "you throw me the idol I throw you the whip" moment, with Navarro getting predictably hosed when he hilariously asked where his car was. I actually found his blind spot here about getting double-crossed believable, considering he had just been burned and Jack Bauer was now hot on his trail within the last half hour. I imagine those things might throw anyone off their game.

Blue Estate Review

Some pieces of entertainment cross lines of decency with purpose and wit in an attempt to challenge or educate us. Many others cross those lines unknowingly, out of ignorance rather than malice. But Blue Estate vaults over these lines knowingly, willfully, and for seemingly no reason but to wallow in adolescent squalor. Its many failed attempts at humor make its bog-standard rail-shooter gameplay all the more unbearable, but the worst part is how gleefully self-assured it is in its outdated notions of writing and design.

You only need to play Blue Estate for a minute or two to know everything there is to know about its 3ish hour-long play time. It’s an old-school arcade rail-shooter, one that doesn’t add any interesting new twists to hide the fact that all you’re doing is pointing at something and pressing a button to make it die over and over.

Hieroglyph Cancelled (Before It Premieres)

The high-concept adventure drama Hieroglyph - which had previously bypassed the pilot stage and had been given a 13-episode series order by FOX - has now been cancelled. The series, from creator Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim), was scheduled to debut during FOX's next midseason.

Per THR, only the first episode of Hieroglyph had been filmed before FOX decided that the storylines and plans for the following installments "weren't meeting a certain level creatively."

EA Chief: Console Wars are Good for the Industry

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore hopes Microsoft and Sony keep fighting to the bitter end.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Moore described how a healthy fight between the console manufacturers ultimately helps publishers like EA.

"Consumers love it as well, and it's good for the industry," Moore said. "You need powerful companies like Sony and Microsoft to be battling out with each other because it drives investment in their platforms. It drives competition. You want to see Nintendo come back with the Wii U. All in all, it becomes healthy for gamers, for the environment. When you have a runaway winner, that actually has a reverse effect."

Under the Dome: Season 2 Premiere Review

"The dome's trying to tell us something!"

"That's ridiculous!"

Oh, Under the Dome. Don't ever change.

Which is to say that's it's no more ridiculous that the dome is trying to communicate with people inside of it than it is for there to be a town trapped inside a giant, supernatural dome in the first place. So any character who arbitrarily dismisses anything, any theory, comes off like a goof.

"Heads Will Roll" had a few things going for it. It had a ton of big action set pieces involving metal getting sucked violently into the side of the dome, and it killed off a cast member or two (neither of them Junior though? Really?) Granted, Linda and Angie (if she's really dead) won't be missed, but their exists still represent the series trying its best to raise the stakes. Much like the series premiere itself last summer, this was a big episode with most likely a larger production budget than some of the other episodes that followed.

DBZ Goes Next-Gen With Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Time to battle.

Goku's battle against Frieza seems fixed in a lot of Dragon Ball Z fans' minds as the series' most iconic duel – so even though Dragon Ball Xenoverse's trailer promises it'll "break tradition," maybe it's appropriate that my first glimpse of Dragon Ball Xenoverse started there. The fight between the powered-up Super Saiyan and the whip-tailed alien emperor unfolded high over a vast lava field, quickly devolving into the rapid-fire punches, kicks, teleports, and energy blasts that characterize seemingly every high-level struggle in the DBZ canon – but wow, was it pretty.

2 New Batman Comics Coming in October

DC Comics is launching two new ongoing series set in the Bat-universe in October, expanding the Dark Knight's shadowy corner of the DCU.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Arkham Manor -- written by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool) and drawn by Shawn Crystal (Wolverine and the X-Men) -- follows the former Wayne Manor, which has been turned into "the local psycho dungeon, and, perhaps predictably, some inmates wind up dead."

Oddworld: New 'N' Tasty Revisits a Classic Oddysee

Retaining the 17-year-old Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee’s 2D puzzle-platformer gameplay, HD remake New 'n' Tasty casts players as Abe, a stitch-mouthed factory slave out to save his fellow Mudokon workers from being slaughtered and sold as meat products by their sinister employer. Abe is puny and mostly unarmed, so this means negotiating a whole lot of traps and automated defenses, sneaking past (and, when possible, mentally controlling) gun-toting Slig guards, and shepherding other hapless Mudokons to "bird portals" that can teleport them to safety. (It also means getting splattered into gruesome chunks every few minutes, if you're as bad at timing jumps or explosive off-switch presses as I was.)

Battle Princess of Arcadias

Battle Princess of Arcadias wasn’t announced with much fanfare, but I sat up and took notice anyway. It immediately reminded me of games like Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire, and since I’m a huge Vanillaware fan, I knew I had to play it. I can’t say that Battle Princess can go toe to toe with Odin Sphere, but it is bubbly mix of beat ‘em up, role-playing, and strategy kept me smiling the whole time I played it.

The first thing I noticed about Battle Princess is its bright and beautiful world, which sets it apart from the more common drab, post-apocalyptic look of so many other games about a world in need of a savior. It’s clear that developer Apollosoft took its art direction cues from Vanillaware (forests and mountains look like they’re copied directly from Odin Sphere), and Battle Princess does a good job capturing the vibrant color palette. Unfortunately, it also looks like an old Flash game, based on the at times flat and choppy quality of the animation. I was relieved to find that choppiness doesn’t affect the gameplay in any way, since much of Battle Princess’ fun lies in the fast-paced combat.

The Leftovers Season Premiere Review

HBO's original plan was to launch The Leftovers after the Game of Thrones season finale (which had 7.1 million viewers and would have put more eyes on the new series), but - as Deadline points out - The Leftovers took a short production break following the completion of its sixth episode and that ultimately led to the delay.

Miyamoto: 'There Needs to be a Nintendo Genre'

In Tomodachi Life, Miis have nightmares of escaping hat-shaped traps. A Super Mario 3D World power-up turns the iconic plumber and his friends into cats. And in the upcoming Splatoon, teenagers can transform into squids –– Nintendo has never been the leading proponent for realistic games.

Shigeru Miyamoto prefers it that way. During an E3 interview with LA Times Hero Complex, the Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong creator said that Nintendo's offbeat titles aren't accidental.

“It’s not that I don’t like serious stories or that I couldn’t make one, but currently in the video game industry you see a lot of game designers who are working really hard to make their games seem really cool,” Miyamoto said. “For a lot of us at Nintendo, it’s difficult to decide what cool is. In fact, it’s a lot easier for us to laugh at ourselves. It’s almost as if we’re performers. Our way of performing is by creating these fun, odd and goofy things.”

Details on Cliff Bleszinski's Next Game Coming This Week

In February, former Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski said he'll never make another disc-based game, citing titles like Rust and Minecraft as examples of where he thinks the game industry should be going. Today, Bleszinski said he would announce details on his next project soon.

"I'm officially coming out of retirement to make video games again," he said on Twitter. "Stay tuned here for details in the next 7 days!"

Rust, the open world survival game created by the makers of Garry's Mod, tasks players with surviving, in spite of other players attempting to do the same. Bleszinski said future games should be fostering players' creativity like Rust does, and that he wanted to make a title that would allow him to have a closer relationship with players.

Rebellion posted a list of retailers that were unaffected on the Steam discussion page where the cancellations were first announced. As of this writing, there are 744 comments on the post.

"To clarify, one of our PC retail distributors informed us that some of their allotted Steam keys were stolen," the developer writes. "We believe these keys were then resold to multiple companies, with no payments going to either Valve or the retail distributor."

15 Gloriously Ridiculous Michael Bay Moments

Spectacular explosions. Slow-motion running. Hot women. And sometimes all three together. No one goes to a Michael Bay movie expecting a sensitive portrayal of humanity – they’re in it for the Bayhem, that trademark blend of IMAX-sized OTT edited together for maximum impact. With Transformers: Age Of Extinction about to set the Dinobots on cinemas, we thought we’d don the safety goggles for a recap of his biggest bits on film, with one advert thrown in for good measure.

The Egyptian finale contains enough daftness to fill this whole list – Shia Labeouf’s endless sliding over cars, Optimus getting pimped out into flymode, Devastator's huge swinging bollocks, Shia dying and talking to the metal gods, Prime turning The Fallen, Megatron and half of ancient Giza into rubble. Did we mention Devastator’s nards? But you can’t beat a good old fashioned slo-mo running from an explosion: in this case, it’s the biggest bang ever shot on film with actual live actors in it. And also Josh Duhamel.

Halt and Catch Fire: "Adventure" Review

Full spoilers for the episode to follow.

With “Adventure,” Halt and Catch Fire delivers its most satisfying episode since the pilot, shedding light on all three of our main characters by delicately exploring the relationships with their family. This episode is deftly written with interesting new developments for Cameron, Gordon, and Joe, and even introduces some much-needed characters for comedy relief.

The common theme of this episode appears to be fathers; we see Joe MacMillan Sr. come around looking for Joe, Gordon’s big shot father-in-law helps him out in setting up a meeting with Japanese electronics manufacturers, and we learn that Cameron may have some father issues stemming from losing hers in Vietnam. The episode never underlines the theme, but rather lets it flow naturally over the course of the episode.

Falling Skies: "The Eye" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

Tom “The Ghost” Mason gets called out by the Espheni who want to put an end to his attempted uprising in the human ghettos. This serves Tom just fine as he needs an excuse to get onto the Espheni craft hovering overhead so he can get a better look at the layout of the compound.

There’s a lot going on in the scene between Tom and the Espheni who is currently acting as their jailor. After three seasons we are only told now that the Espheni left their galaxy and have been gathering resources because there is an even greater threat that is coming for them all. So there is another potential alien race looming in the near future? That has me a little hesitant considering how many new variables they’ve already introduced in the past couple of seasons already. Yet part of me is kind of excited because the fight against the Espheni was becoming a little stale anyways. Still, I thought the whole Lexi storyline was going to remedy that. An entirely new threat? That completely alters the playing field and I fear this may eventually lead to an actual Espheni-Human team up with the Volm or some other crazy scenario. Of course, right now, that’s mad speculation. For now, I’ll remain a little hesitant with some degree of optimism that this could turn into something really exciting.

True Blood: "I Found You" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

Yes, "I Found You" was a noticeably better episode than the premiere - even if only because it felt like it had an actual ending and not just a weird scene where Sookie pleaded with everyone not to hate her. Oh, and please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks it's hilarious that her impassioned speech in the church in last week's episode did absolutely nothing. Everyone still thinks she's s*** and she's still bombarded with all their mental hate.

Actually, some of my gripes with this episode still stem from last week's episode. Everyone still loathes Sookie and blames her for starting the whole vampire craze in Bon Temps (again, nullifying what was meant to be a big moment at the end of the premiere). And Tara's actually dead. Meaning that it wasn't a lame fake-out after all. It was, in fact, a lame death. I may have been wrong in predicting that she'd still be alive, but I will say that I knew we hadn't seen the last of her. So I'm claiming partial points.

Wet Hot American Sumer Netflix Series Update

In interview with CraveOnline, Showalter told the site, "We have an outline, but we don't have a script," when it comes to his Wet Hot American Summer series. "We wouldn't have wanted to do it if we couldn't get everybody," says the comedian, "so we did our due diligence before the fact and everyone wants to do it... Revisiting Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle

Join Kosta as he plays through some of the most seminal adventure games of all time over the course of 2014. You can read all the previous instalments here.

There are very few games that could be considered comedies first and foremost. We’re talking games that can be described by simply stating ‘oh yeah, that’s a comedy’ without any further explanation required.

Comedic elements and jokes are present in a large number of games, certainly, from the on-the-huge-French-sized-nose parody and satire found in the Grand Theft Auto series to the light-hearted tone and playfulness of the story sequences in something like, say, Borderlands. But you wouldn’t call either of those series’ comedies, and when it comes down to it, simply being a comedy is one thing; being a good or great one is something else entirely.

FX Replacing The Strain Billboards Following Complaints

Americans love horror. Whether we're spending millions on the latest possession movie at the box office or making American Horror Story a ratings success, people just can't seem to get enough scares. However, those scares are very isolated experiences that don't haunt your children during family drives.

So, perhaps it's understandable that residents in big cities like Los Angeles and New York are in a nauseous tizzy over the ad campaign for FX's new horror series, The Strain, from Guillermo del Toro, which includes huge, conspicuous billboards of a worm-like creature crawling through a woman's eyeball. The art is also featured on the show's official website.

“The hard thing is if fans want a third movie, they’ve got to go buy the ticket to go see the movie,” Moretz said. “It was like the second most pirated movie of the year, so if you want a movie to be made into a second, a third, a fourth and a fifth, go buy a ticket. Don’t pirate it.”

Best HDMI Switchers

It's awesome bringing home a new Xbox One or PS4, but since neither of those consoles are backwards compatible, you may not want to push your 360 or PS3 out of the living room just yet. Throw a Chromecast or a cable box into the equation and you're looking at a lot of devices competing for ports. If you're tired of sticking your head into a dark, dusty TV cabinet every time you want change systems, just get a splitter!

When it comes to organizing your entertainment center, cables are a necessary inconvenience. If you don't have enough HDMI ports on your television or if you don't have a properly-equipped surround sound system, an HDMI switcher is a great solution for cleaning up the clutter while making sure all of your high definition content reaches your TV without the annoying task of swapping out cables. Take a look at some quality HDMI switchers for your home theater setup.

Transformers 4 Opening Box Office Tallies

Transformers: Age of Extinction opened last night on just shy of 3,000 screens in the U.S. The Thursday night showings, which began at 9 p.m., brought in about $8.75 million, which is less than had been projected.

According to Variety, this is the lowest net for an opening late-night showing in franchise history. The previous low was 2007’s Transformers, which “only” made $8.8 million. The late-night returns peaked with the second installment, 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which took in $16.6 million from its midnight showings. 2011’s Dark of the Moon earned $13.5 million.

Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark Review

A Transformers game really only has to deliver on two simple things: make it fun to transform, and make it fun to destroy robots. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is a dud on both of those fronts, and it throws in a confusing story to boot.

Rise of the Dark Spark has a simple storyline about the bad guys wanting to find the Dark Spark and the good guys trying to stop them. That should make for a straightforward campaign, but a few factors derail the plot. Whereas previous Transformers games, War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, had separate Autobot and Decepticon campaigns, Rise of the Dark Spark’s 14-mission campaign switches between sides without much reason or notice, and unevenly at that. In the middle of the Decepticons capturing the important relic, you jump to an Autobot mission where they're on the hunt, and after the halfway point, the Decepticon's side of the story just stops being told as the Autobots march towards their inevitable victory. The switches are jarring enough that you might forget which side you're on at more than one point during the early stages.

There are just three episodes of 24: Live Another Day left and while one enemy has been vanquished, there's still plenty for Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) to do before another long day is over.

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero Review

Continuing the gruesome gore-porn that Eli Roth began 12 years ago in the original Cabin Fever, Cabin Fever: Patient Zero – the third film in the franchise – offers nothing more than one clever kill and some good make-up effects. If you come to Patient Zero looking for any sort of clever twist on the genre or anything resembling a unique experience, you’ll be sorely disappointed. If, however, you’re just looking for trite dialogue such as “We’re talking about an outbreak on a massive scale!” with escalating gross-out moments, then this movie might have something to offer.

Porter (Sean Astin) is a man being held against his will by Dr. Edwards (Currie Graham) in a remote facility where a flesh eating virus is being studied. We never learn how he wound up there or what his story is, probably because neither the screenwriter nor the director care all that much.

The Leftovers: Series Premiere Review

Advance Review: HBO's The Leftovers casts a gripping, morbid spell. Think of it as a unique entry in the "post-apocalyptic" genre. It's a dystopian future, but with all the amenities intact. It's the human psyche that's taken a beating, not the planet. Numbness, nihilism, anxiety, rage, violence, and mystery all play out on a canvass that resembles our exact world. But it's a world that, on both large and small scales, can't deal with unexplained loss.

Hailing from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and author Tom Perrotta (who wrote the book that's being adapted here), it probably goes without saying that the "unexplained" takes center stage. And people's various reactions, both relatable and cryptic, remain the overall focus. Those looking for hard answers will not only miss the point, but miss the beauty. Because I'm readily assuming that we'll never get a concrete explanation regarding the 140 million people (all ages, races, creeds) that upped and vanished into thin air on a seemingly random October 14th, sending the globe into a swirling haze of questions and proclamations.

Rage Review

A new Nic Cage action movie seems to come along as often as there are days that end in “Y,” so it takes something extra for any one of them to stand out. While Rage isn’t all that spectacular, it’s a solid enough revenge thriller that brings the bullets with minimal brain activity required.

Cage stars as Paul Maguire, a former gangster turned legitimate businessman living with his (much) younger wife Vanessa (Rachel Nichols) and his daughter Caitlin (Aubrey Peeples). Eventually his violent past catches up to him and someone kidnaps Caitlin, causing Paul to round up his old crew – Kane (Max Ryan) and Danny (Michael McGrady) – to take down the kidnappers. Meanwhile, Detective Peter St. John (Danny Glover) investigates Caitlin’s disappearance while trying to keep Paul on the right side of the law.

Oldboy, Drive, Pacific Rim Directors Praise MGS 5

Hideo Kojima's love for film has been front and center throughout the Metal Gear Solid franchise –– the main character is named after Kurt Russell's character in Escape form New York. And after seeing the E3 trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, several film directors were impressed by Kojima's direction.

Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive, Bronson and Only God Forgives, was particularly impressed.

"Watching the trailers for MGSV makes you wonder if the spirits of Dostoyevsky, Stanley Kubrick and Caravaggio entered Hideo Kojima's body because, using the art of gaming as his canvas, he boldly goes where no one has gone before," he said, according to Konami's website.

Will Harrison Ford's Injury Delay Star Wars: Ep. 7?

Harrison Ford may have a longer road to recovery than originally expected for his broken left leg, stirring up reports that Star Wars: Episode VII could see a delay because of Han Solo's importance in the Disney film.

According to Ain't It Cool News, Ford's recovery may take up to six months, which is much longer than the eight-weeks timetable we heard about earlier this month. With Star Wars: Episode VII reportedly focusing on Solo's character, that wouldn't give director J.J. Abrams and Disney any options but to postpone shooting until the Oscar-nominated actor is back in good health.

Advance Review: 13 Coins #1

If you read comics during the event happy, pouch-laden majesty that was the nineties, chances are that you're familiar with the work of Simon Bisley. Rising to prominence behind his strong, painterly visuals (including his iconic Lobo and oft-seen Heavy Metal covers), the Eisner winner returns to interiors, joined by the writing team of Hitman: Absolution scribes Martin Brennan and Michael B. Jackson. The result is an interesting yet uneven debut that's a few coins short of a full roll.

An angels vs demons (who are really angels) yarn, 13 Coins offers a new take on a familiar tale, presenting down on his luck John Pozner as the one man ill-fated enough to be humanity's savior and/or destroyer.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Watts was asked whether Bryan Singer will be back to helm X-Men: Apocalypse, since the filmmaker is currently dealing with sexual abuse allegations against him. How NetherRealm Brought Mortal Kombat Back From the Dead

The Mortal Kombat series has had its lows. Very deep-in-the-fires-of-the-Netherrealm lows. There was a moment, between “Heroic Brutalities” and do-it-yourself fatalities, when even Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon had to know things weren’t going according to plan. Seeming to confirm this notion, Mortal Kombat maker Midway would declare bankruptcy and close its doors in 2009, leaving the bloody MK legacy in a state of limbo. Warner Bros eventually bought the series rights and assets, and after a year at the drawing board, the newly-formed NetherRealm Studios would re-introduce Mortal Kombat to us all, with a re-energized Ed Boon at the helm. It was, against all odds, one of the greatest turnarounds in the genre’s history.

Grabbing Hold of The Orcs Must Die! Unchained Beta

Playing the Orcs Must Die! Unchained beta gave us a great taste of how it’s carrying over the tower-defense inspired design and colorful personality of its single-player and co-op predecessors. It’s creating a distinctive style as it transitions to competitive multiplayer.

The biggest thing to notice is that, unlike a typical MOBA, the minions here never meet head-on in a big fray. Offense and defense have separate lanes, so every time a new wave emerges, you’ve got to decide whether you’re going to help them fight through the enemy’s traps and heroes to score a point on the other side, or try to keep the enemy out of yours with your own traps and defenses. It creates a very different back-and-forth pacing that can get very competitive.

Defiance: "In My Secret Life" Review

Warning: full episode spoilers follow.

My main complaint with Defiance's Season 2 premiere last week was that it was a fairly quiet way to kick things off, especially considering the major upheaval the comes from having the city taken over by the Earth Republic. Well, the second episode picks up the pace a bit, and after watching it I almost wonder if this should have been the season premiere instead.

Sure, the writers needed a way of reuniting Irisa and Nolan and nudging them back to Defiance. But at the very least, it might have been more interesting if the premiere had focused entirely on those two and their misadventures outside the city. And after a little cross-country road trip that showcased the wider world outside the ruins of St. Louis, this episode and Nolan's little detective adventure could have been a fun way of allowing both Nolan and viewer to become reacquainted with Defiance and its residents simultaneously.

IGN UK Podcast #236: British Laughs and Global Leaks

Hello again you lucky things. Yes, it's that time of week again, where Luke, Alex, Krupa and Rich gather to talk all things entertainment-related for your audible enjoyment.

This week's been an interesting one, with rumours and leaks cropping up all over the place. So many leaks, in fact, we've taken to wearing galoshes to work in a bid to stop the water from damaging our lovely suede shoes. I write this from a paddling pool raft, adrift in an ocean of speculation.

Top of the list for dissection are the mutterings about the new Star Wars: Episode VII villains, the big Witcher 3 file leaks and reports that Matt Damon is set to return to the Bourne franchise. We also discuss the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer, obviously, which segues rather nicely into a chat about our famous British comedies of all time. If you're at a bit of a low ebb this weekend, there's definitely some recommendations here that'll brighten your day.

The game released as a soft launch in May, and a number of features have been added since then, including two-player platoons, Facebook integration and improved visuals.

Players can select from a pool of more than 90 American, Russian and German tanks across four classes: light, medium, heavy and long ranged types. Wargaming's mobile game is free-to-play, so players can unlock new tanks as they progress through the ranks in 7 vs 7 combat.

I've Got Issues: How To Make Aquaman Work On The Big Screen

As you may have heard, Jason Momoa has all but been confirmed as Aquaman in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice movie, and then presumably the upcoming Justice League movie, too. If you’re anything like me, this is like hearing Danny Trejo was cast as Spongebob. A tough actor known for playing supreme badasses cast as a character widely regarded as a joke. But after processing this news for a bit, casting Momoa as Aquaman is absolute genius.

Louie: Season 4 Review

Warning: Full spoilers for Season 4 of Louie follow...

This season of Louie wrought many internet "think pieces" about what he may or may not have been commenting on and whose expectations he may or may not have been swerving. All because Season 4 played out differently. And a self-awareness was assumed/attached that I feel may not have existed. As as show that'd already given us three seasons of, essentially, short films ranging from light to dark, pantomime to pathos, satire to surrealism, Louie's always felt like very translucent look into where creator/writer/director Louis C.K.'s heads been at during a particular moment in time.

And so my only assumption here, from this year's dive into a long-form serialized story, is that Season 4 was, perhaps, Louis C.K.'s most personal season to date. Not that we haven't been privy to his psyche before. Often times, uncomfortably so. But the fact that C.K. devoted almost every single episode to the same running story makes me feel like these were topics that were all intimately important to him. Or they were at some point in his recent life. The theme of life post-divorce. From a romance standpoint. From a parenting standpoint. And how children can still be drastically affected by divorce even though, from most perspectives, it was the right decision to make for the entire family.

Dominion: "Godspeed" Review

Warning: full episode spoilers follow.

Whether or not you actually enjoyed the movie Legion, Dominion is clearly a superior continuation of that saga. This world is a more interesting place 25 years after the angelic apocalypse. The series' second episode, "Godspeed," didn't have much in the way of standout moments or big action sequences. It took a quieter, more methodical approach in terms of fleshing out each character and their respective roles in the brewing war. A lot of the material was beneficial, while some illustrated that there are a few extraneous players getting in the way of the rest of the cast.

One of the notable things about this show is how little of the tone and visual style of Legion is present. And by and large that's a good thing. Legion was small and self-contained to the point of being dull. Even so, it was interesting to watch the opening flashback scene in this episode with a younger Jeep and Alex. The small-town setting and close-quarters combat with angels was much more reminiscent of the movie. And it's nice to know we haven't necessarily seen the last of Langley Kirkwood's Jeep, despite his unexpected death in the pilot.

Resogun Heroes DLC Review

In my estimation, Resogun is still PlayStation 4's best game. Its stellar gameplay and the hard-to-escape addiction keeps it on top (though its insane graphics and effects don't exactly hurt), but for some, it's started to run its course since its launch alongside PlayStation 4 in November of 2014. To inject some freshness into its twin-stick, Defender-inspired shooter, developer Housemarque didn't only launch a free patch that adds some new goodies; it's also given the world Resogun's very first DLC pack, called Heroes, that gashes open the barely healed wound of addiction.

Heroes comes packing two new modes. Survival mode’s twist isn't well-hidden by its name, giving you one life to live in Resogun’s brutal gameplay. Instead of roving from stage to stage, you're instead placed in the same cylindrical world (a location called Avernus) as day-night cycles circulate in the background, marking the passage of time. The longer you survive, the more points you gain. Unlike the core experience, your multiplier is never in danger of being reset, and humans don't have to be saved. But you'll want to save them, because rescuing them in sequence gives you upgraded weapons, shields, bombs, and more, which will help you survive. They'll parachute in from the sky, spawn out of defeated enemies, and more.

Transformers Franchise Revenue Breakdown

You probably won't be surprised to learn that the Transformers movie franchise has made a ton of money. But where does all that cash come from?

Variety has a breakdown of the revenue generated by the first three films. Unsurprisingly, box office is a huge piece of the pie at $2.6 billion. But even bigger than ticket sales are the numbers for merchandising, which include toys, video games, apps and more. That figure comes in at a whopping $7 billion. Home entertainment sales account for another $740 million according to estimates. And none of those figures take into account the 50,000 riders per day that pay to take a spin on Transformers: The Ride, a 3D attraction featured at Universal Studios Orlando, Hollywood and Singapore.

Meet World of Speed, an MMO-CaRPG

The Crew may have taken the MMORPG-racer spotlight at this year’s E3, but it wasn’t the only one at the show by any means. Away from the bright lights and booming noise of the expo floor, Slightly Mad Studios – the developer behind Need for Speed: Shift and this fall’s Project CARS – showed off its own entry, the free-to-play, high-velocity MMO World of Speed. Like The Crew, World of Speed puts a big emphasis on team dynamics and forming your own racing club – but its version of teamwork is designed to push players to not just work together, but actually take complementary party roles. And customization plays a big part in that.

"If it’s a racing MMO, and it’s team-based, then performance upgrades are the equivalent of your swords and shield and helmets and things like that in a fantasy RPG," says World of Speed’s creative director, Andy Tudor. "You research the parts you want and install the ones that are specific to the kind of objectives or role you want to take in the team."

Steam Phishing Scheme Steals Users' Passwords, SSFN Files

The Steam Summer Sale is well under way and a phishing scheme is trying to make sure your wallet isn't the only thing feeling the pain.

According to researchers at Malwarebytes, a scheme that first launched earlier in the year whereupon users were tricked into giving up their SSFN files to scammers has evolved to become more of an automated process.

The SSFN file exists to keep you from needing to verify your machine each time you log in to your Steam account.

When you log into your Steam account from an unrecognized source, a Steam Guard window will pop up asking for a verification code that Steam sends to the email address associated with the account. The scam uses a fake Steam page where users enter their username and password, at which point a fake Steam Guard window appears asking the user to upload the SSFN file from their computer.

Designing The Order: 1886's Terrifying Werewolves

We were introduced to The Order 1886's werewolf enemies at E3. Now we're getting an inside look at their design, courtesy of the developers who made them.

The Evolution of the Half-Breeds video above dives deep into why the creatures look how they look, what choices were made to make them feel intelligent, and why you should be afraid of them.

"We really tried to capture the right balance of both human and lupine anatomy and that level of imperfection that makes it not feel like this action comic book creature, and much more like this is a creature that could have existed that we just haven't seen yet," said Nathan Phail-Liff, art director on The Order: 1886.

One IGN editor went toe-to-toe with one of these beasts at E3, and it sent him running for his life.

Sniper Elite III Review

Sniper Elite III is a celebration of extravagant carnage - and, less significantly, a big improvement over 2012's Sniper Elite V2. Its predecessor's stiff, linear gameplay has been swapped out for a more open-ended, creativity-enabling approach to stealth-shooting. But the big draw – the real draw – is the same pornographically violent X-ray-vision carnage that erupts whenever your bullets meet their targets.

These slow-motion, long-range kills are what keep Sniper Elite III from being just another generic-looking World War II shooter. Every effort was made to milk them for dramatic tension. When aiming, you can hold your breath, slowing time so you can watch that red dot shrink in on your target. Tight close-ups of the bullet in flight are accompanied by a steadily swelling roar, giving your shot a sense of impending destiny. Provided your reaction to the resulting gore is a sick thrill and not actual sickness, this is so immensely satisfying that it renders every other weapon at your disposal anticlimactic by comparison.

Game of Thrones Star Implies THAT Character May Never Appear

Warning! This is a news story about a character from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series who didn't show up on the Game of Thrones Season 4 finale when a lot of viewers who'd read the books thought they would. While it now seems they may not appear on the series, strong book spoilers follow, which are also possible show spoilers should the character eventually emerge on TV...

While Game of Thrones has had some deviations from the books, a recent plot point left out of the series left fans especially surprised.

Michelle Fairly, who played the ill-fated Catelyn Stark on HBO's Game of Thrones, recently discussed Catelyn's re-emergence in the books as the "Lord of Light" resurrected "Lady Stoneheart" - a sight many book fans thought they'd see in the closing moments of the Season 4 finale, "The Children."

Why 90% of Fans at Tales of Festival Are Female

Now in its seventh year, the Tales of Festival is the ultimate celebration of one of Japan's most popular RPG series. Drawing 22,000 fans over two days to Yokohama Arena just outside Tokyo, the festival is a chance to see voice actors from the games - all the way back to 1995's Tales of Phantasia - interact on stage and act out skits, along with live music and exclusive updates on new Tales of games. It's fan service on an epic scale.

While it's fairly surprising that a single franchise could gather an arena’s worth of fans for two days running - despite an eye-watering ticket price of 7,000-13,000 yen ($69-127.50) - what is all the more impressive is the gender split. Far from the stereotype of a game otaku sausage party, the crowd at the 2014 event is almost exclusively female.

Tales of Zestiria’s Secret Weapon is Fusionic Chain

Seeing Tales of Zestiria’s Fusionic Chain Linear Motion Battle System in action, the spectacle is almost too much to process. Sitting in the cavernous Yokohama Arena during the recent Tales of Festival, and watching the world’s first unveiling of the new system on a giant screen along with 10,500 fans, I wanted to call out to series producer Hideo Baba on the distant stage to hit the slow-mo button.

The Tales of games have always been lauded for their action-packed battle systems, tweaked only slightly from game to game to offer some of the most frantic and fun fights in any JRPG series. But the Fusionic Chain system is properly nuts.

WildStar Review

Like the countless alien adventurers already descending into the mystery of planet Nexus, WildStar is itself a stranger in a strange land. As newest massively multiplayer roleplaying game in an already crowded genre, it has has an uphill battle in winning a piece of that market – and further still, keeping it engaged enough to warrant the monthly subscription fee. To compensate, developer Carbine Studios has cast the widest possible net by striving to cater to both casual players and the hardcore MMORPG player, a sizeable feat rather deftly accomplished by sticking to the formula that’s found success, while fleshing out new ideas therein.

In that regard, WildStar is of course not the next evolution of the modern MMORPG. Instead, it’s much more the culmination of a decade’s worth of experimentation and design, cherry-picked and enhanced, and infused with Carbine’s twists and light-hearted flourish. While some may find the lack of bold new directions disappointing, that’s less a criticism of WildStar and more of the genre as a whole – WildStar isn’t rewriting the book, as much as it is penning the sequel.

Alien: Isolation Is 1080p on Xbox One and PS4

SEGA's Alien: Isolation will look pretty similar on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with both versions of the horror game running at 1080p.

Creative Assembly's Gary Napper spoke with Total Xbox about the differences in visuals between the next-gen versions of Alien: Isolation and confirmed that the game is 1080p on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. "... When I think about working on the game, it's almost platform agnostic because I only think about the differences between platforms and the different mechanics we can use, like the light on the PS4 pad and the stuff with Kinect 2.0," Napper said.

Best Explosions In Video Games

With Transformers coming out, it didn't take us long to think of a way to celebrate it. Like the movies' director Michael Bay, the All-Stars love explosions. In fact, they love them so much we compiled a list of their favorite explosions in video games, ever.

The_Hitman86: The Blue Shell in Mario Kart 8 ... it's lethal and it annoys everyone it affects!

Pre-Order Beware the Batman's Final Blu-Ray

Beware the Batman is getting another Blu-ray release for the remaining episodes of its last (and chances are, final) season.

Titled Beware the Batman: Dark Justice, the single-disc set is now available for pre-order at Amazon, and contains the final 13 episodes of the first season.

beware2dskewjpgBeware the Batman was notable for featuring lesser-known Batman villains, such as Professor Pyg, Anarky, Mister Toad, and Magpie, making Katana Batman's sidekick, as well as redefining Alfred as an able-bodied protector (not JUST a butler) to Bruce Wayne.

Rocket Raccoon Gets His Own Comic Book

Forget Original Sin, The Death of Wolverine, and AXIS. All of those books pale in the face of what is clearly Marvel's biggest and most important release of the summer - Rocket Raccoon. Finally, this gun-toting space rodent will have a comic to call his own. Even better, his best buddy Groot is joining him for the ride. Even better-er, master illustrator Skottie Young will be at the helm as both writer and artist.

To tide you over until the July 2 release of Rocket Raccoon #1, we have an exclusive preview of that issue. You may have seen some of the art before, but this is the first time Marvel is releasing these pages in their final, lettered form.

21 Crazy Facts About Sonic and the Console War He Started

Although Nintendo dominated the video game scene in the late 1980s, a new challenger appeared in 1991. The story of how SEGA entered the console race and turned it into a war is told in Blake J. Harris's book, Console Wars: SEGA, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation. While Console Wars focuses on SEGA's meteoric rise (which makes it a complementary read to David Sheff's definitive history of Nintendo, Game Over), it's also filled with amusing trivia about the inner workings of Nintendo and even Sony, who were already plotting to join the battle for teenage televisions in the early '90s. Here are 21 crazy historical tidbits I learned about Sonic, Mario, SEGA, Nintendo, and (the original) console wars.

Deathstroke and Black Manta Join the Suicide Squad

DC's most recent volume of Suicide Squad recently wrapped up in the aftermath of Forever Evil. But the series is only taking a short break before returning in a new form. The aptly titled New Suicide Squad will present a revamped Task Force X. While mainstays like Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot are pariahs, new recruits like Deathstroke, Joker's Daughter, and Black Manta are basking in their recent victories and looking for an excuse to cause a little bloodshed.

We have an early look at New Suicide Squad #1, which debuts the new creative team of writer Sean Ryan and artist Jeremy Roberts. Look for that issue to hit stores and digital providers on Wednesday, July 9, with a cover price of $2.99.

Depp's Gangster Pic Orders a Side of Bacon

Actor Kevin Bacon will spend part of his hiatus from the FOX series The Following, where he stars as FBI agent Ryan Hardy, playing ... an FBI agent.

Deadline reports that Bacon has "joined the cast of WB’s untitled Black Mass project opposite Johnny Depp as notorious Irish mobster Whitey Bulger, whose relationship with FBI agent John Connolly allowed him to evade law enforcement and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history. If you like classic 2D platformers, you should probably just stop reading this and go get Shovel Knight on Wii U or 3DS. If you decide to stick around, there's still some other cool stuff on the eShops this week, too. Wii Sports Club reaches its dramatic conclusion on Wii U with the addition of Baseball and Boxing, both of which are online and make use of the GamePad. The Legend of Korra Blends Bayonetta's Combat with Mystic Elements

Platinum's The Legend of Korra isn't the same sort of licensed trash we've grown accustomed to -- and that's entirely because the license is perfect for the developer. Korra is a strong series, and its smart and powerful lead character lends herself well to the sort of hard-hitting melee combat that the Vanquish/Bayonetta/Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance developer is known for.

IGN played through a handful of levels of The Legend of Korra, both as a low-level Korra with limited bending abilities, and as the unstoppable Avatar fans know her for. But what does the game have to offer those who don't know Platinum, or those who don't know Korra?
