In the grand tradition of “one night” movies like Martin Scorsese's After Hour or The Hangover, writer-director Steven Brill's Walk of Shame sends Elizabeth Banks to hell and back in under 24 hours. Unfortunately, a majority of the trip is spent in limbo.
Banks' comedic chops stroll across familiar beats (in broken high heels, nonetheless) before surprising with a poignant finale that justifies the vanilla escapade. Walk of Shame is only sporadically funny, but revisiting the well-tread format with a female perspective feels refreshing and necessary.
Meghan Miles (Banks) is a Los Angeles news anchor on the verge of hitting it big. Or was, before life collapsed from under her. After losing out on a national news gig, Meghan returns home to find her longtime boyfriend, and all of her possessions, vamoosed. To dispel the worst-day-ever funk, her pals Rose (Gillian Jacobs) and Denise (Sarah Wright) take her out on the town for a night of skimpy outfits, alcohol, and flirting with whomever they damn well please. Good ol' fashioned fun.
