In the mind of DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, movie prices should be relative to the size of the screen you watch it on.
At a conference this week, Katzenberg declared, “Pay by the inch you watch,” suggesting that audiences should pay to see a movie based on the size of the screen they view it on.
“A movie screen will be $15,” continued Katzenberg, “A 75-inch TV will be $4. A smartphone will be $1.99.” He goes on to confidently say that “it will happen” and will “reinvent the enterprise of movies.”
Katzenberg also proposes that movies should be made available for viewing in theatres for only 17 days (ideally making back all of its money), and after which, you can watch the movie on any of your home devices -- whether it be TV, tablet, phone, holodeck, and so on.
