Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Why does it always have to be three trials? The aptly named “The Vault of Heaven” features da Vinci and company working together to overcome the booby-trapped temple as they attempt to finally acquire the Book of Leaves. Considering how often the Vault of Heaven has been mentioned over the course of the series the episode’s title certainly suggested the episode would be a landmark moment. However, while it has a few standout moments, it appears the true secrets of the vault will remain hidden, for now.
As expected, the vault was built to ensure that those who attempt to gain entry are intelligent and resourceful enough to get by its various traps. Essentially, the vault was designed for Leonardo da Vinci’s particular set of skills. The first trial required da Vinci’s skills as an engineer. While not as elaborate as a submarine, the self-powered cart was a little too conveniently whipped together to overcome the obstacle. Ima’s line about having her entire empire available to craft those perfectly designed gears was a decent throwaway line to explain why the cart was built in less than a day. Still, it would have taken hours. I would have at least liked to have heard some groans from a few weary Incan warriors who grew tired while waiting for da Vinci’s genius to take physical form, for humor sake.
