24: Live Another Day - Premiere Review

When 24 ended its run four years ago, the once-mighty series had grown too familiar, even a bit stale. By Season 8, the strain of filling so many hours in real time had taken its toll and the show’s creative team, the network and maybe even fans agreed that it was time to take a step back. After a few years of rumors and false starts on a feature film, Jack Bauer returns to TV once again this Monday, but with a few tweaks to the formula. There’s not just a change in location -- this time Jack pops up in London with a big target on his back in order to foil yet another terrorist plot -- but the 24-hour period will now be covered in 12 real-time episodes, meaning we'll jump ahead in-between episodes at some points of the season. Time will tell, but this has sounded like a great idea since its announcement. Having long since proven that they can indeed fill 24 episodes with action, cutting it in half gives the creators the chance to cut the fat and deliver a lean, mean ride. If the opening episodes are any indication, that’s exactly what they’ve done.
