The Machine Review

The best of science-fiction offers a reflection of ourselves as a society; the path that we’re on and what it could mean if we never change course. The Machine, written and directed by Caradog W. James, excels at this. Though it explores territory familiar to the sci-fi genre – artificial intelligence and whether or not a machine can be human – it does so with such endearing characters and specificity that it quickly becomes one of the most thought-provoking sci-fi movies since District 9.


Vincent (Toby Stephens) is an experienced and talented A.I. engineer that is secretly using his research funded by the Ministry of Defense to develop the first self-aware artificial intelligence in an effort to cure his sick daughter. Partnered with the very green Ava (Caity Lotz), Vincent conflicts with Thomson (Denis Lawson) as he tries to convince the Ministry that The Machine (also Caity Lotz) he creates is not just another soldier, but a living being.
