Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
As the title of this week's episode suggests, the Big Bang Theory writing crew have dusted off the "Anything Can Happen Thursday" concept. Given that this little shared celebration dates all the way back to late Season 2, the show could certainly be accused of falling victim to formula and rehashing old storylines. Not that this was a particularly lousy episode, but certain elements definitely felt stale. The best that can be said is that the premise allowed the writers to explore the same nontraditional character pairings that have often been a focus of Season 7.
"The Anything Can Happen Thursday Recurrence" started off on a strong note, as it built both on Penny's continued struggle to build her acting resume and Sheldon's crisis of purpose after having given up on pursuing his String Theory research. Maybe it''s not the best sign that the show has to be applauded for acknowledging recent continuity, but whatever. Rather than offer any real progress on either front, Sheldon and Penny's mutual malaise was the springboard to bring back their Thursday tradition.
