Pretty Deadly #5 Review

prettydeadly5 Pretty Deadly #5 sees the series' first story arc come to a close, capping off an epic that was equal parts fairy tale, creation myth, and trigger-happy Western. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Emma Rios set the bar high for themselves from the very first issue and now, five chapters later, they've proved that they were more than capable of living up to it.


Pretty Deadly is a book that defies easy categorization and because of that, it's not always the easiest read. In issue #5, the peculiar poetry that was the story of Sissy and Fox came to a conclusion that managed to be both bittersweet and inevitable. Bunny and Butterfly's conversational narration tied the story's disparate pieces together, though the issue did feel a bit packed to the gills with a little too much plot. Juggling as many characters as there are in Pretty Deadly isn't easy, and a few were quickly and conveniently shuffled off the page with little ceremony.
