Betrayer Review

Betrayer is a stylish and interesting take on first-person shooters that feels incredibly unfinished. Developer Blackpowder Games draws in a ton of elements loaded with potential, like its unique art style and a rarely-explored setting, but none of them are developed to a satisfactory depth.


It’s an intriguing starting premise: Awakening on the shores of a stark, monochromatic depiction of 17th century America, I was struck by the use of splashes of red, which Betrayer effectively uses to highlight important items, NPCs, and enemies. But while the depiction of the wilderness is attractive and unique, it’s mostly empty of any meaningful content. The world feels barren, and none of the different areas feature elements that make them stand out.
