Microsoft will enable support for Dolby Digital surround sound with the next Xbox One patch, due out in March.
Presently, the console's optical-out port only supports two-channel stereo sound. The new patch should make the Xbox One compatible with surround-sound headsets from third-party manufacturers.
The omission of the 5.1 surround sound feature upon launch was a bit strange, given that both Microsoft's and Sony's consoles have had 5.1 optical sound support since the Xbox era; Microsoft's director of product planning, Albert Penello, had said previous to launch that this was due to a "
