Starred Up Review

British prison drama Starred Up announces the arrival of a serious acting talent in the shape of Jack O’Connell. The Derby-born 23-year old is probably best known for his role as Cook in TV series Skins, but he’s also been building up a fine celluloid CV playing violent or troubled teens in the likes of Eden Lake, Harry Brown and Tower Block.


But the brilliance of his performance in Starred Up – hot on the heels of 300: Rise of an Empire, and with the lead in Angelina Jolie’s WWII drama Unbroken to come – should catapult him into the big leagues.


Here he plays Eric Love, a young offender whose violent episodes see him ‘starred up’ – that is moved to an adult prison for the protection of his fellow inmates. And the film’s nearly wordless opening scenes tell you all you need to know about Eric as he struts into the prison, attitude personified, effortlessly fashions and stashes a shank in his cell, goads his fellow inmates with glee, and brutally attacks the prison wardens.
