Helix: "The Reaping" Review

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.


Believe it or not, "The Reaping" is the season's penultimate episode, but instead of building to an exciting climax, Helix gave us a bunch of clumsily written relationship drama and poorly plotted action. At one point Sarah was suddenly randomly shown calming a crowd of out-of-focus scientists who we've never seen speak at all, let alone angrily. And we didn't even get any cool Vector action this week.


Last week, Hatake warned of "The Scythe", Ilaria's uber effective assassin, and this week he said he's spent hundreds of years perfecting the art of killing, so I was looking forward to some serious bloodletting. Instead, we get Spencer Chiswick, who's been a petulant teenager for hundreds of years and gets into even more of a snit when he discovers that his mother, Sutton, has been beheaded by Hatake. And maybe he is the ultimate badass, but he certainly didn't have to be, what with Daniel handing him the virus and himself and Hatake taking everyone back down to the lower levels in the death elevator instead of one of his many secret passages. And in the end, Alan is able to take him out with a crowbar. What a let-down.
