While the jury's still out on whether it will spur a franchise of Hunger Games and Twilight-level success, Divergent opened at No. 1 this weekend ahead of fellow new release Muppets Most Wanted.
Divergent earned an estimated $56 million, slightly lower than the studio's $60 million projections. Muppets, on the other hand, underperformed with an estimated second place debut of $16.5 million.
The Disney sequel had been projected to open in the low $20 million range. The holdover Mr. Peabody & Sherman likely ate into Muppets Most Wanted's key family demographic.
The faith-based film God's Not Dead had stellar fifth place showing of $8.6 million from just 780 screens. Lars von Trier's controversial sex drama Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 had, um, performance issues with a mediocre limited release showing of just $175,000 from 25 theaters. The fact that the film was already available on VOD likely cut into its box office take.
