Blood Ties Review

Scrape away the faux-grime of its 1970s-era decor and there's a live wire sparking at the center of Blood Ties. Riveting friction sporadically flickers between stretches of wandering narrative in the latest from writer-director Gullaume Canet (Tell No One). Putting the “mellow” in melodrama, the familial crime saga strolls down a well-worn path of feuding siblings, broken relationships, and hard-knock heists.


There's enjoyment to be found watching an ensemble of today's best actors play dress up; When Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, James Caan, and Matthias Schoenaerts sink their teeth into material, we feel it. In Blood Ties, that fanged dramatic attack tears straight through the thin drama. Looking like The French Connection isn't all that's required to be like The French Connection.
