Warning: Full spoilers for Season 1 of Black Sails follow...
Starz's detailed and somewhat grounded pirate series, Black Sails, while taking half its initial eight episodes to get things moving, wound up in a very strong place in the Season 1 finale - with Captain Flint's desperate, obsessive desire to locate and plunder a Spanish treasure galleon finally pushing his entire crew to a mutinous breaking point. Not every character paid off the way they should have in this first batch of episodes, but the story of Flint and his day-to-day deceptions regarding his own crew, and trusted friends, anchored the show nicely.
Strong performances here too from Toby Stephens and Mark Ryan as Flint and Mr. Gates, all the more noticeable at the end when Flint, with no other recourse, tearfully murdered his best mate and former quartermaster. All in the name of an autonomous pirate paradise that Flint hoped to procure with the gold from the ever-elusive Urca de Lima. A quest that had already cost many men their lives, and Flint his soul after he handily murdered his suspicious boatswain, Billy Bones, and made it look like an accident.
