Bates Motel: Season 2 Premiere Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...


The truth is, Norman is a very sensitive boy, he also may or may not be a murderer. Bates Motel concluded its freshman season with a bloody cliffhanger, and the Season 2 opener raised more questions about poor comely Miss. Watson's death than it answered. Initially, I'd been hungry for a concrete reveal, but the truth is, part of the joy of the series is dancing around Norman's staby tendencies. Of course, we know that he's already killed his father, but once he really starts down the path of - mostly - unprovoked lady-slaying, it'll be the beginning of the end for Bates as we know it.


In other words, once Norman starts to subconsciously associate sexual arousal with the need to kill, he'll be the Norman we know from Psycho and no longer the boy who had the potential to be saved. Linking lovely B Watson's death with some of the continuing mysteries on the show, like Bradley's burned-alive father and the entrenched criminal element, was a clever way to add a sense of cohesion to all of the, heretofore, splintered madness on the show.
