In August of this year, illusionist David Copperfield registered for trademark protection for the letters “DC” as they appear in the logo below. Not such a big deal, EXCEPT: as part of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s requirements for applying for a trademark, you have to specify what your business is all about. Copperfield’s registration document, while lengthy and obviously over-inclusive, contains one intended use that may raise a few eyebrows: comic books. That’s right, David Copperfield intends to market and sell comic books under the name DC. Can’t imagine anyone having a problem with that.
