Brian K. Vaughan again seeks to blow minds (and torsos) in literal and figurative fashion, his latest installment upping the stakes in a number of different ways. The end result is a great issue that's equal parts shocking and powerful, as characters deal with a myriad of different feelings and conflicts.
The distance between Marko and Alana reaches new levels here in issue #21, a moment of desperate intimacy ringing of finality. Vaughan warned us this was going to happen yet it's no less difficult to see, the writer painting each muttered doubt with almost unbearable realism. As Marko tries to sort out his feelings, Alana continues her further retreat, pulling away from both her husband and reality in general. The couple's space faring hijinks made for grand adventure, but the resulting trauma is proving to be most affecting.
