I was lucky enough recently to attend a special “Animation Master Class” hosted by DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox. On hand were directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, the artists behind the caveman comedy The Croods, who used the class to walk a group of NYU animation students through the creation of their awards-nominated cartoon.
Also on hand was the Oscar-winning animator John Canemaker, who runs the animation department at NYU (and was my professor many moons ago). The evening was great fun -- Sanders in particular is a bit of a showman -- but also very informative not just for students of the medium but casual fans as well.
The studio was kind enough to put together a five-minute highlight reel from the class for us, which you can watch below. The Croods was also nominated for a Golden Globe last week for Best Animated Feature Film, which puts it on track for the Oscar race as well.
