With the How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day Headhunter Pack, Gearbox continues its ongoing experiment of adding little morsels of seasonal content to Borderlands 2 for a nominal fee. But while this third pack succeeds where the other two have failed in the humor department, it’s still too small of a piece of content to be worth coming back to Borderlands 2 for if you weren’t playing it anyway. What’s there is good fun, but it ends just as it feels like it’s beginning.
Mercenary Day’s inventive little introduction put a childlike grin on my face. As the doors of a magical wardrobe inside Marcus’ shop swung open, I expected to see a fast-travel portal that would send me to my destination, but instead I stepped through it and directly into the winter wonderland of Gingerton. It’s an unexpected bit of magic that aptly sets the holiday tone, and the snow-capped pine trees and broad, icy mountain ranges frame it well. Gingerton feels like a far-off place that’s tucked away from the rest of Pandora, lending it a sense of wonder that plays nicely with the overall theme.
