Toy Story has already made one foray into television specials with the Halloween story Toy Story of Terror, and now they're back with a Christmas tale. Executive producer Galyn Susman, director Steve Purcell, head of story Derek Thompson, and voice actress Kristen Schaal (Trixie) joined moderator Michael Giacchino at Comic-Con and offered several hints about the characters and plot of Toy Story That Time Forgot.
Toy Story has a backwards start. Galyn Susman said that 24 years ago at Pixar, they were trying to get a short called “A Tin Toy Christmas” onto television. Disney ended up taking the stars of the short, Woody and Buzz, straight to film, but now they've circled back around. Steve Purcell said coming off Brave, he had the chance to work on a six minute Toy Story short that featured a band of dinosaur toys called Battlesaurs who had never been played with and sort of have a vicious, fighting society. John Lasseter asked Purcell to flesh out the world into a full 30 minute short, and Purcell worked with Derek Thompson to build the backstory and lore of the Battlesaurs.
