Eric Stephenon started the SDCC Image Expo with a somber talk about what mainstream comics have become -- gimmicks, deaths, and crossovers that feel more like fan fiction. He went on to say how the comics industry has long been a Boys Club run by young white men, but comics now need to diversify. After a video of notable Image creators -- Erik Larsen, Brian K. Vaughan, and Kelly Sue Deconnick, among others -- talking about the benefits of Image and how they let the creator do what they want, Stephenson brought different creators to the stage to briefly talk about their new Image comics.
First up was Rick Remender who is already writing Black Science, Deadly Class, and Low for Image. He now has a fourth(!) series called Tokyo Ghost with Sean Murphy and Matt Hollingsworth. He compared it to Judge Dredd and Lobo and 80s action movies. It’s a commentary on modern society and its obsession with technology, but also with lots of violence and gore. Out 2015.
