FOX brought its trippy Wayward Pines pilot to Comic-Con for an exclusive screening. Based on the best-selling novel “Pines” by Blake Crouch, the show tells the story of Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke, who wakes up injured and confused in the woods outside Wayward Pines, Idaho. He had come to the area to find two missing colleagues, one of whom he has an illicit history with. At first he's just annoyed by the odd behavior and cheerful stonewalling he encounters in the strange little town, but soon he realizes he may have fallen down the rabbit hole.
Without getting into spoilers, the pilot looked quite good. It is gorgeously shot, though the opening shot of an eye followed by an injured man in a suit stumbling through the trees was perhaps a shade too reminiscent of Lost unless its a deliberate homage. But once Matt Dillon is let loose in Wayward Pines, the show really clicks. There is a real sense of existential dread as Agent Burke encounters the initially cheerful but usually quite menacing townspeople, but its tempered by a darkly comedic tone that keeps things from being too bleak.
