It’s hard to believe that Daniel Radcliffe has never done San Diego Comic-Con before, but he’s finally here this year to talk about his new film Horns. Also on hand for the panel today were director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, Piranha 3D) and Joe Hill, who wrote the 2010 book on which the film is based.
Radcliffe stars in the RADiUS/Weinstein Company film as Ig, a guy who wakes up one day to discover that he has creepy powers -- and horns that are starting to grow from his head. Juno Temple plays his dead girlfriend, who he is accused of killing. But with his newfound abilities Radcliffe’s character hopes to clear his name and find the real murderer.
A sizzle reel was played that started with Ig and his girlfriend in a moment of romantic idyll. “I’m gonna love you for the rest of my life,” he says. “Just love me for the rest of mine,” she responds. Cut to Ig, bags under his eyes and looking more Snape than Potter, making his way through an angry crowd -- the locals in town think he killed the girl. “If I did that to her, I’m a monster!” he yells. Cut to him awakening some time later as, in fact, a sort of monster, as Ig sees horns emerging from his forehead. They’re small at first, but seem to grow as the story proceeds. He realizes that everyone in the town is going crazy, and it’s because of him and the horns -- people in his presence are compelled to reveal their darkest secrets, or even do his bidding apparently. A group of reporters are pestering him for an interview in a parking lot, and he suggests that if they beat the heck out of each other, the winner will get the interview. Which they do, throwing down in what is perhaps the first newscaster death brawl since Anchorman. From there, the reel became increasingly hellish in its imagery with flames and snakes and even pitchforks, oh my. The footage closes on Radcliffe with a huge snake draped around his neck. “I made a new friend,” he says.
