The latest John le Carré adaptation is like flipping through an 800-page novel for a quote you swear you remember. Like a literary inkblot of anxiety and paranoia, A Most Wanted Man's cloudy mystery lurks across the screen waiting for its characters to find the right perspective and jolt it back to reality. Philip Seymour Hoffman is at the center of the subdued, cat-and-mouse game as Bachmann, a German spy contending with the past, present, and future of espionage as he searches for possible threats. Director Anton Corbijn mimics Bachmann's struggles by setting the audience adrift in the agent's chaotic mission. A Most Wanted Man is hard work — and for that, the rewards are much sweeter.
