The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today the 10 films that are still eligible for Visual Effects Oscars this year (in alphabetical order):
- Elysium
- Gravity
- The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
- Iron Man 3
- The Lone Ranger
- Oblivion
- Pacific Rim
- Star Trek Into Darkness
- Thor: The Dark World
- World War Z
Of course, the surprise contender here is Disney's The Lone Ranger, which was critically panned and bombed at the box office this summer. In addition to Lone Ranger, Disney has two other big films in the race: Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Warner Bros. also has three films in the running: Gravity, Pacific Rim and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
