Jafar and Alice's childhoods had some unexpected parallels. Those two characters aren't ones you'd ever expect to relate to each other, but they pulled it off without it being utterly ridiculous. It's an example of the kind of solid storytelling this series is capable of handling. Even though Jafar and Alice both felt like unwanted children and bitter about their fathers, they took very different paths in their lives. Being killed by his father was definitely a turning point for Jafar – one he never recovered from.
His father put Jafar on the path to the dark side, and it was surprising yet not surprising to learn the old man in Jafar's prison was none other than the former Sultan. I'm impressed they kept that gem under wraps for so many episodes. It was a sound decision since the way they revealed it tonight made it have more of an impact.
