Lee Daniels' The Butler Review

The director of Precious and The Paperboy tells the story of long-serving White House butler Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker, in the film's most important yet also most thankless role) in Lee Daniels' The Butler, which is based on the life of the late Eugene Allen, who served eight U.S. presidents over 34 years.


The Butler not only documents Gaines' experiences glimpsing these commanders-in-chief at their most vulnerable, but also includes all the major political and cultural touchstones in postwar 20th century African-American history. With its nonstop southern-accented narration, greatest hits music cues, and mix of historic footage and reenactments, there are times when The Butler feels a bit like Forrest Gump as we witness one man encounter different famous people over some of 20th century America's most turbulent years.
