The crossover event has become a hallmark of the X-Men franchise. Ranging from '90s epics like Age of Apocalypse and X-Cutioner's Song to more recent efforts like Messiah War and Second Coming, it's tradition to unite all the core X-titles into one major, status quo-redefining storyline. With 2013 being the franchise's 50th anniversary and with the X-Men largely sitting out the events of Infinity, what better time than now to launch a new crossover?
Battle of the Atom deals in two very familiar X-Men elements -- time travel shenanigans and dystopian futures. It's appropriate than an event aimed at celebrating the franchise's long history is one with a scope that reaches from the team's origins to the distant future. This first issue doesn't deviate very far from what has already been revealed about the premise of Battle of the Atom. A new series of events convince Wolverine and his Jean Grey School colleagues that the time has come to send the original five X-Men back to their timeline. But the arrival of a ragtag group of mutants from the future quickly turns this very straightforward mission on its head.
