Marvel kicked off their new Infinite Comics digital format last year alongside the debut of Avengers vs. X-Men. It was a nicely high-profile vehicle to piggyback upon, helping to bring extra exposure to what was clearly a bold and effective new approach to digital storytelling. Fittingly, Marvel has another significant foray into the Infinite format lined up to coincide with the start of Infinity. Infinity: Against the Tide stars Silver Surfer, a character who has gone an inexplicably long time without a solo series of his own. And it's written and storyboarded by Jason Latour, the scribe who thrived in the thankless position of following up Ed Brubaker on Winter Soldier.
Against the Tide #1 is largely independent of the events in Infinity #1, aside from the fact that it features the Builders dispatching their Alephs to raze another world. In this case that world is Hy'Lt Minor, a remote Skrull colony. Though Silver Surfer is ostensibly the star of the show, Latour is often more interested in the Skrull colonists. Surfer serves as an unseen, almost omniscient narrator for the first half of the issue as Latour explores the many varied ways in which the Skrulls react to their impending doom. Some are pragmatic, some are swept up in religious fervor, and others will sacrifice anything and anyone to survive. This approach offers a more intimate, "human" side of the same sort of disaster we saw in Infinity #1 as Galidor was razed. Given that so many event comics suffer because of a lack of this human element, it's good to see at least one Infinity tie-in with emotional weight firmly in mind.
