After last month's debut, I was hoping that Satellite Sam #2 would improve upon the title's already shaky foundation. Sadly, this was not the case. While writer Matt Fraction and artist Howard Chaykin have put together a technically cohesive book, Satellite Sam is missing that vital spark that would make it an interesting read.
It's almost impossible to ignore the problematic gender politics in Satellite Sam. While we know Matt Fraction is not only capable of but often excels at writing nuanced women characters, there's a disappointing dearth of them in Satellite Sam. And it isn't simply their lack of plot involvement that makes the women of Satellite Sam feel sorely underutilized. It's the presence of the static, inanimate female figure that emphasizes the absence of the fully realized female character.
