In case the title alone didn’t clue you in, Guncraft is all about two things: shooting and building. Based on the art style, I went in expecting some blatant rip-off of Minecraft, but I found Exato Studios’ game to be more than that. Guncraft borrows shamelessly from everything from Call of Duty to Mario Kart, but what it lacks in true originality and bug squashing it makes up for with creative execution in the arrangement of its many parts.
The one mechanic Guncraft pulls off best is the gunplay. (That’s probably why it’s not called Craftgun.) I felt right at home dominating enemies with an assortment of vehicles like helicopters, tanks, and even hoverbikes; reaping the benefits with killstreak rewards such as jetpacks and RC drones; and using iron sights to pull off across-the-map headshots, made easier by the big blocky heads of the character models. Relative to the Call of Duty games it’s so clearly aping, I missed the sense of accomplishment that comes from level progression and unlockables, but Guncraft still provides a feeling of achievement through the ability to create maps, skins, and even weapons to be voted on by the community.
