New member here and have been reading a lot and thanks to all of the good information on this site. I currently race a nostalgia front engine dragster with a N/A 900 HP BBC so I am very familiar with BBC engines but not so much on the special needs of a boat motor. Long story short I was offered a deal I could not pass up so I now have a 1990 30 ft Advantage in really good condition but of course in the deal the motor is apart and it also has a king cobra outdrive. I have figured out the outdrive is a 1990 model with the cone clutch and does not have the issues of the dog bone. What I do not know is how much HP these can handle. I also figured out that the motor I have is probably a mercruiser Bulldog (540 cubic and 470HP? I think). Has a great lower end with a nice Callies crank and H beam rods. The heads are 088 iron with a hydraulic roller and forged flat tops. My understanding is that these came N/A but the previous owner said that the boat had a blower on it but had a freshly rebuilt mercruiser SC (weiand 177 and read these are really loud at WOT) with a Teague super chiller, manifold and all the pulleys and belt to replace the smaller blower it had (how can it be smaller for that cubic in?). From my reading this blower is WAY to small for this cubic inch, but I would like to hear what others think. My machinist now has the motor and is going to clean, go over and check all the parts. My plans for the boat is to not hot rod it yet as I would just like the family to enjoy it and get used to having a boat and also save the outdrive for as long as possible as I have come to the conclusion I will have to replace that outdrive at some point if I want to put some HP in the boat. My other concern is that this will be a Tahoe boat so will a blown motor be better so just get a larger blower now or could a 600HP N/A motor be ok to get me by for a few years?
Thanks
Scott
