Hey guys,
My brother in law just picked up a 1978 challenger. Its pretty clean and he got a decent deal on it. We took it to the lake Saturday to lake test it and i have a few questions.
The boat is a 1/4 stringer 18 foot boat, stock 460, dominator pump, A impeller, Place Diverter full droop, and a Hydraulic Place diverter (new style). Starts up and sounds great fresh plugs, wires, etc.
We took it out Saturday and since this is his first jet boat, I drove it first for a little while.
Couple of things i noticed.
Comes up on plane pretty quickly for not having a lot of power. The diverter works well. When on plane though, the boat constantly wants to go right. You literally have to constantly steer to the left. Not over steer but you cant just let go of the wheel and have it go straight. (i can in my boat) The steering is VERY light compared to my boat. I dont know if this could contribute to it or not.
Doesnt take much up nozzle for the thing to porpoise pretty hard, easily fixed by trimming down though.
Spins about 42-4300 rpm with the A impeller. IDK the mph, didnt GPS it. But he did say at 2500-3k it was cruising about 32mph. Pulls pretty good from a roll to wot, just porpoises with to much diverter.
any ideas on the steering? Does the RPM sound about right? I was considering pulling the droop and trying without it if you think that might help?

Light steering/bad setup?
