Nicks in Piston

A guy has a 454 long block he wants to sell me, that came out of a boat. It was supposedly professionally built and the the boat repo'd by the bank. This guy pulled the engine and found small nicks in the top of one piston and put another engine in the boat. He's asking next to nothing for it, so I was skeptical. The marks look like someone put a long reach plug in it and broke the electrode off. It has a lot of good stuff in it, so I'm going to get it no mater what, but would you run it with maybe 10 small nicks in one piston?

The 4 bolt block has been decked clearenced for the valves and heads have roller rockers, guides and studs and big valves. I'm guessing it will be in the 11:1 compression range. I need to pull the cam and check specs. I'll post pics when I get it home.

Old Clear Coat

Hello PB,

My mostly original '77 Sleekcraft Kaui had a coat of clear put over the gelcoat back in the day.

From what I see the root beer metal flake and yellow gel are in really good shape under it all.

Our short seasons and lack of sun are pretty kind to gel and 'glass up here. Not sure why the PO cleared it over.

Worst spots are around the fuel fillers, front deck and trim edges where the clear was staring to haze, chip and look like shitte.

Most likely gonna get worse before it gets better and the foggy clear makes the yellow look like calf puke.

I'm not looking for a show boat finish but wanted to take some of the fugly from the worst spots.

After doing some searching it looked like a whole lot of elbow grease and wet sanding / polishing may get me there but also found some references to using oven cleaner.

I spent some time wet sanding with 600 grit at the worst spot, the port fuel filler deck, it was slow going with meh results....but it was better. Stll needed more work to look decent.

Had (quite) a few beers and got brave.....hit same area with oven cleaner, only let it sit for 10-20 seconds in case it affected the gel.

Wiped it down and it looked way better, appeared to soften the clear at the open edges and actually remove it with just a little rubbing.

Also gave a less noticeable transition to the bare gel and the stuff with clear over it. Didn't notice any effect on the gel coat.

Seems like mission accomplished, a good temporary Hillbilly Fix. :))THumbsUp

I'll be doing the other fuel filler area (with pix this time) using the same timing and technique ..... also the deck area and a couple spots along the edge of front deck.

My question is...

If I decide to get serious and remove all the clear from the cap and sides of hull this winter, how aggressive can I get without hurting the gel?

Can it sit until I see the CC blister / wrinkle / soften?

It's said that gel is pretty tough, at least compared to the clear. I just don't want to eff up the gel and make things worse.

Appreciate any advice.

Hello, I'm looking at a tunnel hull jet boat locally and it has a 396bbc and the guy claims it to be doing 85+mph Is that true?


Secondly, I have a 700p+ weekend vette and I like power. I have had boats and always wanted a v drive or maybe try a jet boat to have crazy fun in.

I wish I could try both side by side, but in WI it's hard to find these boats.

My plan is to put at least a 555-632 and maybe a blower if needed on it and have a fun bat for nice days. Looking at 850-1500hp depending.

Will this pump take that hp?

Switching to Boating

Been reading the forum for awhile for information and finally joined. Currently looking at getting out of drag racing, currently run a nostalgia front engine dragster and getting a boat so the whole family can enjoy going fast. Mainly would be boating on Lake Tahoe.

OMC King Cobra strong enough for motor

I am currently looking at buying a used boat from a friends friend kinda deal. I am only really interested because it comes with a very nice motor (blown 540 with a intercooled whipple supercharger) and would be a great family boat for Lake Tahoe. The boat is a 1990 30ft Advantage Victory that is in great shape (been sitting for 15 years) but it currently has an OMC King Cobra outdrive. I have been doing a lot of reading on these as the owners flat out told me these are not the best outdrives. I do not know the HP of the motor yet but I would assume it to be above 500HP and is obviously not an OMC powerplant.

So my question is if I can buy this boat for lets say a really good deal how much would a complete replacement of a bravo 1 or other kind of outdrive that could handle this power cost?

I am new to boats but not new to spending money LOL. Just trying to see if it would be worth my time if the price is right. I also have some pics of the boat and outdrive if that helps.

Moroso fabricated aluminum oil pan Part #21600 for a jet boat (flywheel aft) application. Has kick outs on both sides, windage tray, very nice pan. Comes with a new oil pan gasket. Pan new is $730, I'll take $400 + the ride. This is a real nice pan, near perfect condition.



Short deck to tall deck intake spacers. Allows you to use a short deck intake on a tall deck block. Comes with end pieces too. $100 shipped.
